Korean Lacquer Craft with Long History
Pyongyang, March 28 (KCNA) -- Korea's lacquer craft has a long history.

Its lacquer craftworks had already appeared in the periods of Ancient Korea (early 30th century B.C.-108 B.C.) and the Three Kingdoms (early 3rd century B.C.-middle 7th century A.D.), as proven by lacquer coffins and vessels discovered in ancient tombs in Rangnang District of Pyongyang City and the mausoleum of Kogukwon, the 21st king of Koguryo (B.C. 277-A.D. 668), located in South Hwanghae Province.

In particular, mother-of-pearl lacquer craft was developed in the periods of Koryo Kingdom (918-1392) and the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).

As groundwork for lacquer craft, wood had been usually used with metal, earthenware and hemp cloth.

From olden times, Korea's lacquer craftworks have been popular at home and abroad as they are solid, clear and lustrous.

Now, the art of lacquering further developing in conformity with the requirements of the times and its wares are widely used in the cultural and emotional life of the people.
