Severe Drought Witnessed in DPRK
Pyongyang, May 15 (KCNA) -- Severe drought has been lingering in all parts of the DPRK.

According to a meteorologist, the average precipitation of the country from January to early May was 54.4 mm, 42.3 percent of the average annual precipitation (128.6 mm). It is the lowest figure since 1982 (51.2 mm) and similar to the figure of 2014 (55.8 mm).

In particular, the country witnessed 0.5 mm rainfalls early in May. There were no rainfalls in Pyongyang City, Nampho City, and North and South Hwanghae and Kangwon provinces.

On May 13 it rained in most parts of the country, except the east coastal area, but the average rainfall was 2 mm.

The reason is that low pressure is passing through the northern part of the country and hot air in the south does not move up toward the north.

The weather condition for heavy rainfall is not expected to prevail till the end of May.

If the precipitation in the last ten days of May goes under 50 percent of the average annual precipitation, the country's average precipitation from January to May this year will be about 75 mm, the lowest figure since meteorological observation.

The agricultural sector is directing efforts to securing water to prevent drought damage.
