President Kim Il Sung, who had established a people-oriented independent external financial system after the liberation of the country, saw through the actual demand in the development of the external economy of the country in the post-war period and made sure that the foreign trade bank in charge of state's external settlements and financial work was founded on May 20, Juche 48 (1959). He also led the bank to fulfill its mission and duty.

With his extraordinary wisdom and leadership, Chairman Kim Jong Il developed and enriched the President's unique idea and theory on finance, clearly indicated the path to be followed by the external financial work in every period and at each stage of the revolution and construction.

For the past 60 years since its foundation, the bank has developed into a state bank and an external financial organ of the DPRK, fully demonstrating the validity and vitality of the Party's external financial policy.
