The British Association for the Study of Songun Policy, the British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea, the Korean Friendship Association UK and the British Solidarity Committee for Peace and Reunification of the Korean Peninsula in their joint statement said that citizens in Kwangju turned out in the struggle against the dictatorship of the Chun Doo Hwan military fascist clique in May, 1980.

The joint statement said that the Kwangju Popular Uprising was recorded as a new chapter in the history of the south Korean people's struggle against the U.S. and fascism.

The south Korean military fascist clique, instigated by the U.S. imperialists, brutally suppressed the uprising, it said, adding that the blood shed by the participants in the uprising will not be in vain.

The Switzerland-Korea Committee and the Swiss Group for the Study of the Juche Idea stressed that the Kwangju Popular Uprising was a mass armed uprising for independence, democracy and reunification.
