Pyongyang, May 31 (KCNA) -- Agriculturalists of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea have bred 40-odd high-yielding fruit strains suited to the local climatic and soil conditions in recent years, which were registered in the list of national variety. According to Kye Ryong Gil, director of the Institute of Pomiculture under the Academy of Agricultural Science, the newly-bred fruit trees include apple, pear, peach, apricot, persimmon, grape and plum. A distinct success was made in the research into the species of peach which is labor-saving in cultivation and high in profits. 17 new strains of peach are short in growing period and highly resistant to diseases and coldness. Typical of them are "Sukchon Peach No.3" growing well even in 30 degrees Celsius below zero and "Sukchon Big Peach" whose weight of each fruit is 500 or 700 grams. The pomiculture field of the country has made signal successes like harvesting 50-100 tons of fruits per hectare through a dynamic scientific fruit farming drive. |
