Pine, National Tree of DPRK

Pyongyang, June 24 (KCNA) -- From olden times, the Korean people have loved the pine tree, planting it on a mass scale in different parts of the country including villages, mountains and seashores. They gave the name of "Song" (pine in Korean) to places thickly covered with pine trees. They also widely used pine tree as a main theme of literary works, paintings and craftworks. Carried in "Samgukyusa (History of the Three Kingdoms)", a documentary of the 13th century, are writings singing of pine tree. A person with the pen name of Samyongdang and Jong Mun Bu, who were active as heads of volunteer corps during the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598), wrote poems "Chongsongsa" and "Solsup (pine wood)". And "Rimwonsipryukji", a book published in 1825, deals with how to paint pine tree. There are also many proverbs related to pine tree. The pine is national tree in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. |
