The novel deals with the Imjin Patriotic War (1592-1598) which the Korean people defeated the Japanese invaders.

It was written on the basis of the historical data on the war and folk tale heritages handed down among people.

It can be divided into four parts according to the contents.

The first part shows the war preparation of the Japs and the details.

The second deals with the early days of the war when the government army repeated the defeats by the sudden invasion of the Japs.

The third depicts the continuous victory of general Ri Sun Sin and struggle of volunteer troops in different parts of the country.

And the last one describes the content that a person with the pen name of Samyongdang received the surrender documents from the Japs in Japan as the envoy, after expelling the Japs from Korea.

The novel, the first one dealing with the Imjin Patriotic War, has an important significance in the history of the Korean literature and is regarded as a worthwhile cultural heritage in understanding the history of the Korean people's patriotic struggle against aggression.
