In the DPRK, the educational work has constantly developed in keeping with the demand of the leaping times.

This would have been unthinkable without the undying feats of the great leaders who attached importance to the education in their lifetime.

President Kim Il Sung provided the Juche-based educational idea and tradition in the period of the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle. And he founded Kim Il Sung University to train revolutionary talents in a far-sighted way after Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule and gave a clear-cut exposition of all the problems arising in the educational work.

During the Fatherland Liberation War, he took such unprecedented steps as recalling students and teachers from battlefields so that the educational work could continue without letup.

In the periods of postwar reconstruction and socialist construction, he saw to it that schools were built before anything else and universal compulsory primary and secondary education systems were enforced one after another and efforts of the whole party and state were directed to the educational work.

He made public a famous work "Theses on Socialist Education" on September 5, Juche 66 (1977) to provide a great programme for Juche education which indicates the path of socialist education, the road for training independent and creative human beings.

Chairman Kim Jong Il had successfully implemented the theses on socialist education, publishing a famous work "On Further Developing Educational Work" in July 1984 to make the flames of the educational revolution spread across the country.

He took a step to increase the state expenditure for education year after year even in the 1990s when the people of the DPRK had to experience the arduous march, forced march, and gave ceaseless field guidance to many educational units.

Under the energetic guidance of Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un who creditably carries forward the noble intention of the great leaders on giving priority to education, education in the DPRK is advancing towards the target of making all the people well versed in science and technology and turning the country into a talent power.
