The Blackfaced spoonbill belonging to Threskiornithidae has been known as a rare bird which is no more than 3000 heads in the world.

Until now, no more than 10 heads of this bird had been observed at sanctuaries.

In the course of making a survey of animals and plants, scientists of the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences unusually observed over 30 heads of the bird in June last, which amount to one percent of its total number worldwide.

The fact proves again that the Mundok Migrants Sanctuary has good physiographical position and condition favorable for migrants' inhabitation.

The Mundok Migrants Sanctuary was registered on the list of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar List) and acceded to the Ramsar Convention. And it was also registered as an East Asian-Australasian Flyway network site.

It serves as a habitat for 22 kinds of endangered water birds and other water birds like white-fronted goose amounting to over one percent of their total numbers in the world or East Asia.

More than 80000 water birds of 120-odd kinds like duck and snipe make a stopover in the sanctuary in spring and autumn, in particular.

The DPRK set 30-odd areas in the east and west coast as migratory bird and wetland reserves.
