Famous Songchon Chestnut of Korea
Pyongyang, November 6 (KCNA) -- Songchon chestnut has been well known to the Korean people from long ago.

In particular, chestnut growing in Jangsang-ri is a specialty of Songchon County, South Phyongan Province of the DPRK, and its community there is registered as a natural monument.

Songchon chestnut tree has a strong resistance to coldness and its fruit gets ripe in late September-early October. A chestnut-bur of this tree contains three nuts in general and the weight of each nut is 7-8 grams.

The nut contains 64.5 percent of starch, 13.4 percent of carbohydrate and 9.6 percent of protein.

In an interview with KCNA, Kim Un Dok, chairman of the Management Board of the Songchon County Fruit Co-op Farm, said:

In the county there are at least 1000 hectares of chestnut forests, including several hundred hectares cultivated by our farm.

This year alone, the farm planted 16000-odd chestnut trees and secured over 2 tons of seeds.

It has applied 20 tons of farmyard manure per hectare every year while putting spraying of agrochemicals, extermination of harmful insects and pruning on a scientific basis to lay a sure guarantee for raising the output of chestnut.
