DPRK Papers on Criminal Fabrication of "Kanghwa Island Treaty" by Japanese Imperialists
Pyongyang, February 27 (KCNA) -- Leading newspapers of the DPRK on Thursday elaborate on the crime of the Japanese imperialists, saying that they forced "Kanghwa Island Treaty" on the feudal government of Korea on Feb. 27, 1876.

The fabrication of "Kanghwa Island Treaty" and even its articles vividly show the aggressive nature, viciousness and bellicosity of the Japanese imperialists and it is a product of military threat, blackmail and fraud by the Japanese aggressors, says Rodong Sinmun in an article, and goes on:

For the realization of their cunning aim they engineered "Unyo-maru" incident.

In the wake of the incident, they regarded it as a golden opportunity for a large-scale armed invasion against Korea under the pretext of "accusation", claiming that the Korean side committed a hostile act towards Japan.

As above-mentioned, they threatened and blackmailed the feudal government of Korea with cannons and warships to force it to accept their unilateral and unreasonable demands and conclude "Kanghwa Island Treaty" of 12 articles.

"Kanghwa Island Treaty" was termed "Korea-Japan friendship regulations" by name, but it was, in essence, the unequal one which comprehensively violated the sovereignty and interests of the Korean nation.

By stipulating their de-facto extraterritoriality in the treaty they were able to place restrictions on the exercise of sovereignty of the feudal government of Korea and commit all kinds of crimes like aggression and plunder in Korea as they pleased, free from legal binding force.

Minju Joson in an article says: The Japanese aggressors laid a foundation for aggression of Korea with the fabrication of "Kanghwa Island Treaty" and concluded "Jemulpho Treaty", "Hansong Treaty" and other pacts by force. In the long run, they cooked up the "Ulsa (1905) Five-point Treaty" and "Korea-Japan Annexation Treaty" to realize the colonial rule over Korea.
