Survey of New Wetland Reserves to Be Deepened in DPRK
|
|
Pyongyang, February 27 (KCNA) -- This year it is planned to deepen the survey for confirming new wetland reserves on the west coast of the DPRK, a main position of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. In this regard, an official of the Central Committee of the Nature Conservation Union of Korea told KCNA: Eurynorhynchus pygmeus (Spoon-billed Sandpiper) stays in South Hwanghae Province of the country in April-May and August-September and Platalea minor (black-faced spoonbill) reproduces in the coastal areas of South Hwanghae and North and South Phyongan provinces in April. Those birds are in danger of extinction worldwide. The Union will confirm new wetland reserves on the basis of correctly finding the above-said birds' stopover places and breeding places through field survey. And, in keeping with the decisions of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is planning to confirm the relevant places of national, regional and global significance on the west coast of the country like Sindo Migrants Sanctuary and Mundok Migrants Sanctuary in North and South Phyongan provinces and register them on the list of natural heritage of the World Heritage Convention and the list of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar List). The west coast of our country rich in biodiversity has served as a habitat, breeding place and stopover place for migratory birds in the Northeast Asian region. |
