High-yielding Chestnut Sapling Bred in DPRK
Pyongyang, March 2 (KCNA) -- Scientists and technicians in the forestry field of the DPRK succeeded in breeding a high-yielding chestnut sapling.

They bred a new sapling in the method of grafting scion on sprout of chestnut and provided a technical guarantee for putting the production of this chestnut tree sapling on an intensive and industrial basis.

The new method helps reduce the cultivation area of saplings sharply and shorten their production period by 2-3 years. The fully grown chestnut tree is 3 meters high, so cultivation and fruit harvest can be done easily and productivity per hectare can be raised thrice.

The newly-bred chestnut tree can bear fruits 3-5 years after the planting of its sapling.

In autumn last year alone, more than 500000 chestnut trees were planted in different parts of the country, including Pyongyang City and Kumya County of South Hamgyong Province, and the rate of their rooting was ensured at more than 90 percent.

Meanwhile, they completed a technology of creating the dense planting pine-nut forest to move up the fruit harvest period by 8-10 years, thus making it possible to raise the productivity 1.5 times as against that of ordinary pine-nut tree.
