Pyongyang, April 2 (KCNA) -- Songdan is famous for its piney forest in the DPRK. It, located in Songjong-ri of Riwon County, South Hamgyong Province, is a holiday resort for the working people. The piney forest formed along the seashore presents a spectacular sight. Originally, there was not even a young pine tree in this area before the first half of the 17th century. Its inhabitants started to plant pine trees in the area south of the Songjong Stream from 1643 and in the area north of the stream from 1661. After all, those pine trees came to form a coastal windbreak in 1728. But, this pine grove was seriously damaged by the Japanese imperialists during their colonial rule over Korea in the last century. Thanks to the peerlessly great men's noble love for the country and the nation, the piney forest returned to its previous state after Korea's liberation. On August 27, Juche 38 (1949), President Kim Il Sung visited the area and gave instructions to plant pine trees on the blank spaces, made by the Japanese imperialists while cutting them down at random, and thus beautify the scenery of the seashore. When visiting Songjong-ri on July 26, 1967, Chairman Kim Jong Il stressed that the piney forest is a precious treasure to be well conserved through generations. |
