Mirim Barrage, First of Its Kind in DPRK
Pyongyang, June 19 (KCNA) -- In the DPRK, the Mirim Barrage is the first comprehensive hydraulic structure built across the Taedong River.

It has played a big role in providing water for farming, allowing boats and cars to travel, producing electricity, protecting Pyongyang City from flood, etc. over the last 40 years.

The Mirim Barrage Office is now ensuring the water control on a higher IT and scientific level based on the real-time data transfer system and automatic control system for floodgate via computer network. It raised vessel traffic capacity by realizing the automatic control of lock chamber operation.

In this regard, Pak Won Sik, chief engineer of the office, told KCNA:

The Mirim Barrage was built in a matter of one year and half from October Juche 67 (1978), under the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il.

The President set a site for its construction on the spot and gave important instructions on such project-related matters as designing, organization of construction force and supply of building materials. Later, he frequented the barrage under construction to settle knotty problems.

The Chairman energetically guided the barrage construction to complete it wonderfully.

In the wake of the Mirim Barrage, such modern barrages appeared along the Taedong River one after another as the world-leading West Sea Barrage and Ponghwa, Songchon and Sunchon barrages.
