First Breeding of Shelduck Observed in DPRK
Pyongyang, July 13 (KCNA) -- Recently, a winter bird shelduck was witnessed breeding for the first time in Yo Islet belonging to the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve in the DPRK.

The Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve was registered as a Ramsar Site, the first of its kind in the country, and the Network Site of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.

Ri Chung Song, section chief of the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, told KCNA:

Twenty-two shelducks including eleven young shelducks were discovered during the intensive survey of avifauna at the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve on the west coast of Korea in June.

The young shelducks are believed to have been hatched out early in May. This fact proves that the bird lives in the Korean peninsula in summer, too.

Shelduck is a bird distributed in vast areas from West Europe to the central and northeastern regions of China. In general, it had been known as a winter bird living in group on the Korean peninsula from late September to the end of April next year.

The observation of winter bird's breeding in summer is of academic significance in studying the change of water birds' habitats and strengthening the protection of migratory bird and wetland reserves.
