Wartime Song Popular among Korean People
|

Pyongyang, July 14 (KCNA) -- Seventy years have passed since "Song of National Defence" was created in the DPRK. This is the first wartime song that had been sung by the Korean people during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953). The song arouses the burning hatred against the aggressors seeking to invade the DPRK and wreck the happiness of its people. After Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule (August 15, 1945), the enemies had run amuck to unleash a war of aggression on the DPRK in fear of the rapid development of its democratic forces and the growing desire of the fellow countrymen for national reunification. In the period from January to September 1949 alone, they committed armed invasions on the DPRK several hundred times. In spring of 1950 when the danger of war was imminent, a poet Jo Ryong Chul and a composer Ri Myon Sang created the song with the surging hatred and the will of annihilating the enemies. The song depicting ardent patriotism and the spirit of defending the country spread all over the country soon after its birth. In June 1950 when the invaders provoked a war against the DPRK, many workers, peasants and youth and students volunteered to join in the Korean People's Army with the strong will to defend the country and their villages. The number of volunteers reached as many as 740,000 from June 25 to July 11. The brave men and officers of the People's Army readily dedicated their lives to the great victory in the war, singing the "Song of National Defence" that inspires them with the fighting will to wipe out the enemies and the confidence in victory. The song is still sung by the DPRK people, recalling the spirit of defending the country displayed in the 1950s. |
