Grass Handicraft with Long History
Pyongyang, September 25 (KCNA) -- Korea has a long history of grass handicraft.

From olden times, its people have made daily necessaries with different kinds of vegetable materials.

At the beginning they made only baskets or mesh bags with dried grass or bark, and this handicraft was gradually developed into one of the national industrial arts reflecting aesthetic feelings and vital needs. In the Middle Age, fine workmanship and beautiful color patterns were created and grass works depicting human life and natural scenery were made to enhance the artistic value.

In Koryo period (918-1392), sedge mats and cushions with various patterns like ten long-living animals and things enjoyed great popularity. In the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), mats with flower patterns were chosen as one of the special products of Korea, which came to be known as a world-famous mat producer.

Grass handicraft is now being further developed in keeping with the emotion and aesthetic sense of the Korean people.

Grass-work factories and cooperatives in the DPRK have turned out cushion, bag, hat, shoes and other products with sedge, corn shuck, etc. Their products won a high appreciation at international and national exhibitions of commodities.
