Olympic Gold Medalists in DPRK (5)

Pyongyang, October 22 (KCNA) -- International sportsdom witnessed another boxing star of the DPRK after Ku Yong Jo, called a prototype of modern boxing. He was Choe Chol Su who won a gold medal in 51 kg category boxing event of the 25th Olympic Games in Juche 81 (1992). Choe defeated his Egyptian, British and Australian rivals in preliminary and quarterfinals and Hungarian rival, a world championship holder, in semifinals. At that time, he was the only Asian boxer who advanced into the finals in weight categories of the Olympic Games. In the finals, he overwhelmed his Cuban rival 12:2 to take the first place. He bagged a gold medal in the 1st East Asian Games and silver and bronze medals in the 6th World Boxing Championships and the 16th Asian Boxing Championships. He also held a featherweight champion of the PABA after becoming a professional boxer. He was awarded the title of People's Athlete in 1992. |
