Pyongyang, October 29 (KCNA) -- Recorded in the DPRK's history of sports development is a proud success made by Kim Il, who won two gold medals at Olympic games. Kim Il emerged a winner at the 48 kg category freestyle wrestling event of the 26th Olympic Games, following the 25th Olympic Games in Juche 81 (1992), to be the first twice Olympic gold medalist of the DPRK. His excellent performance drew attention of the world wrestling circles and amateurs. At that time, Japanese newspapers reported about his two consecutive victories, saying that his technique was excellent as he had been estimated as the world's strongest and that he was filled with self-confidence and enthusiasm as was four years ago. He won the Asian championship in 1992, 1993 and 1996 and a gold medal at world juvenile freestyle wrestling tournament. He was awarded the title of DPRK Labor Hero in 1996 and the title of People's Athlete in 1992. |
