May Day Stadium in Pyongyang

Pyongyang, November 4 (KCNA) -- The May Day Stadium with 150 000 seats is situated on Rungna Islet in Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK. The stadium has a football field, running tracks and offices for referees and test and registration suited to the international standards and enough cultural and welfare facilities. This comprehensive and modern mass sports center is associated with Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un's devoted efforts for the country's sports development and the people's cultured life. Going round the stadium in September Juche 102 (2013), the Supreme Leader initiated the project for giving a complete facelift to it in conformity with the demand of the times and took all necessary steps for its remodeling such as the formation of competent designing and construction force and the supply of building materials and equipment. In June 2014, he toured the stadium under reconstruction, stressing the need to push forward the project in a creative and innovative manner from the standpoint of Juche and with world insight and vision. And he gave detailed instructions on its remodeling including the color of spectators' seats. In October that year, he came to watch, together with Pyongyang citizens, a women's football match at the stadium reconstructed wonderfully as a symbol of the country's sports facilities. He extended thanks in the name of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea to servicepersons, builders and volunteers who performed labor feats in the project, and gave important teachings on turning the stadium into an important center for the country's sports development and the promotion of people's cultural and emotional life. After its reconstruction, the stadium has successfully hosted a grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance "The Glorious Country" for marking the 70th birthday of the DPRK, the 13th People's Games, the AFC Cup and other events. |
