Tannamu Widely Cultivated in DPRK
Pyongyang, November 9 (KCNA) -- Tannamu (Aronia melanocarpa) with high medicinal value is widely cultivated in the DPRK.

Yonthan County in North Hwanghae Province has been noted for the cultivation of Aronia melanocarpa, which began 10-odd years ago. Industrial establishments, co-op farms, schools and households in the county are now getting great benefit from the mass-cultivation of Tannamu.

In this regard, Kim Yong Chol, manager of the county resource mobilization station, told KCNA:

The station gathered at least 30 tons of berries from its Aronia melanocarpa forest this year. It is producing extract, tea and sweet jelly with those berries.

The forest of Aronia melanocarpa is very useful for soil protection and bee-culture. The station has gained a great economic profit from its berries and processed goods, and it is planning to extend its cultivation area.

Aronia melanocarpa is a gift plant a foreign personage presented to President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea (Oct. 10, 1985).

The President named the plant "Tannamu" and gave detailed guidance to use it for the improvement of the people's living.

Chairman Kim Jong Il and Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un stressed the need to mass-cultivate this tree conducive to the promotion of people's health.
