Thaechon Lacquer Craft
Pyongyang, December 9 (KCNA) -- Thaechon County in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK is famous for lacquer craftworks.

The lacquer tree, distributed in most regions of the country, is growing intensively in Thaechon County, in particular. Lacquer of this area has been widely known for its softness, gloss and good quality.

From long ago, the Korean people have applied lacquer to the production of dinner-table, rice bowl, spoon, chopsticks, vanity, wardrobe, tea tray and other necessities and craftworks and regarded the Thaechon lacquer craft as a model.

The technique of the Thaechon lacquer craft is characterized by application of black color. Toward the end of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), Thaechon lacquer craftworks were known even to other countries.

Thanks to the Workers' Party of Korea's policy on national heritage conservation, the Thaechon lacquer craft has been steadily carried forward.

The lacquer craftworks factory took its shape in Thaechon area and its various products are widely used by citizens.

When visiting Hakdang-ri in Thaechon County in August Juche 47 (1958), President Kim Il Sung gave an instruction on cultivating and using lacquer trees well, noting that the county has had many lacquer trees from olden times.

The stock of lacquer trees in Hakdang-ri was registered as a natural monument in the country.
