Indigenous Plants of DPRK

Pyongyang, December 18 (KCNA) -- In the DPRK, there are hundreds of species of indigenous plants. Among them are Pentatina rupicola, Abeliophyllum disticum-Taesongsan, Echinosophora koreensis and Megaleranthis saniculifolia that belong to one genus and one species. Pentatina rupicola, growing on rocky cliffs 400-800 meters above the sea level in the area of Mt Kumgang, is 30-70 centimeters high and comes into bloom from the latter part of June to July. Its small light pink flowers are out in the shape of compound raceme. It has an ornamental value for its good-looking plant corpus and beautiful flowers. Abeliophyllum disticum-Taesongsan with fan-shape fruit is growing at the Central Botanical Garden. It is 1.6 meters high and comes into bloom around March-April. Its white and light pink flowers are out in the shape of botryose inflorescence. Echinosophora koreensis, growing in the areas of South Hamgyong and South Phyongan provinces, is 30-50 centimeters high and its yellow butterfly-shaped flowers are out in the shape of botryose inflorescence about May. Megaleranthis saniculifolia, growing in marshlands around Chonghakdae of Jagang Province and Mt Kumgang of Kangwon Province, is a perennial plant with simple and radical leaf. Its stalk is 30 centimeters high and its bisexual flower is out from the stalk tip around May-June. Besides, there are Keumkangsania asiatica and Keumkangsania latisepala that belong to one genus and two species. The height of their stalks is 15-70 centimeters and 20-80 centimeters respectively. Their bisexual, blue purple or white flowers are out in the shape of botryose inflorescence from the stalk tip around July-September. |
