The tank force, a symbol of the Korean People's Army's combat strength, came into being by President Kim Il Sung who founded and strengthened the regular armed forces after Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule (August 15, 1945).

Basing himself on the Juche-oriented army-building idea, the President set it as an urgent task for building the regular armed forces to organize a tank unit along with other services and arms in accordance with the features of modern warfare and had wisely led the work for its realization.

He advanced the above-said task in August Juche 37 (1948) and set a goal to train the first tank men in 2-3 months without regard to the already established training period. And he gave detailed teachings on making research into tank combat methods suited to Korea's geographical conditions and personally organized a demonstration lecture of training to inspire trainees with confidence in improving their skills.

In November 1948, the President conferred the colors on the first tank unit and reviewed the unit.

Later, this tank unit performed great feats in combats to liberate Seoul and Taejon and many other battles during the Fatherland Liberation War against the armed invasion of the imperialist allied forces and thus won the title of guards unit.

Today, the tank force of the DPRK has developed into an elite corps capable of coping with any modern warfare, fully displaying the might of the revolutionary armed forces.
