Pyongyang, April 14 (KCNA) -- The 60-meter high Arch of Triumph stands on the road in front of Kim Il Sung Stadium at the foot of Moran Hill where President Kim Il Sung made a speech on his triumphant return to the homeland on October 14, Juche 34 (1945). This stone edifice was built to convey the immortal feats of the President who defeated the Japanese imperialists by leading the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle to victory and achieved the sacred cause of Korea's liberation. The edifice, the construction of which was initiated by Chairman Kim Jong Il, was unveiled on April 14, 1982 on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the President. Immortal revolutionary hymn "Song of General Kim Il Sung" and letters "1925" and "1945" carved in relief on upper part of the front wall and four pillars of the Arch of Triumph tell the feats of the President who set out on the road of revolution in his teens and liberated the country by leading the 20-year-long anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle to victory. Mt Paektu, holy mountain of revolution, depicted on the left and right walls and the sculptures in relief "Long Live General Kim Il Sung!", "Long Live the Liberation of the Country!", "Looking Up to the General" and "For the Building of a New Country!" reflect the Korean people's deep respect for the President and their faith and will to uphold his leadership with loyalty. Carved around each archway are 70 azaleas symbolizing the 70th birth anniversary of President Kim Il Sung. |
