Afforestation of Oil-bearing Chestnut Trees

Pyongyang, April 27 (KCNA) -- In the DPRK, efforts are directed to creating the oil-bearing chestnut tree (Xanthoceras sorbifolia) forests. This tree with high ornamental value can be used as raw materials for various processed foodstuffs. A tree 7-8 years old bears in general more than 80 seed cones, oil extracting from which is used in curing arteriosclerosis and making lubricant, soap, paints, etc. It has been widely cultivated in Pyongyang City and Jagang, Ryanggang, North Hamgyong, North Phyongan and South Phyongan provinces. In particular, various cities and counties of North Hamgyong Province created hundreds of hectares of oil-bearing chestnut tree forests to add beauty to landscape. Saying that the credit for such spread of oil-bearing chestnut tree over various parts of the country goes to the efforts of President Kim Il Sung, Ri Phyong Won, a researcher of the Academy of Forest Science, told KCNA: The President, who had worked heart and soul for the improvement of people's diet in his lifetime, personally cultivated the tree in the garden of his residence to learn about its biological characteristics and cultivation method and named it "Kirumbamnamu". And he indicated the detailed orientation and ways for spreading it over the whole country and guided the work to create its forests through an all-people movement. |
