Old Pine Trees of Songdowon

Pyongyang, May 6 (KCNA) -- On the east coast of Korea, there is Songdowon well-known as a beauty spot of the world. Here you can see a famous pine forest with the history of 700-odd years. This forest was formed when Korean ancestors planted young pine trees to prevent sea wind and movement of sand. But the pine forest had been used as a pleasure resort for Japanese and the exploiting classes during Japan's military occupation of Korea (1905-1945). Just before their defeat, the Japanese imperialist aggressors cut down pine trees there at random and dug up even roots of those trees to extract turpentine for war supplies, thus spoiling the scenic beauty of Songdowon. After President Kim Il Sung liberated Korea on August 15, Juche 34 (1945), the pine tree forest of Songdowon could recover its original appearance. Though he was busy guiding the work for building a new country, the President?visited Songdowon and stressed the need to plant many pine trees there so as to make its green pine forest sway in all seasons. After the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953), he again visited the severely damaged pine forest in Songdowon and took a step to protect the old pine trees there. Chairman?Kim Jong Il?said that the old pine trees in Songdowon are more precious treasure of the country than gold, stressing the importance to take a thorough measure for protecting them. True to the instructions of the President and the Chairman, people in the area have turned the pine forest into thick one, adding beauty to the scenic spot. |
