Nyongbyon, Silk Producer of DPRK
Pyongyang, May 18 (KCNA) -- Silk is a traditional textile of Korea, and Nyongbyon County in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK has been known as one of its famous silk producers from long ago.

According to historical records, silk was mass-produced in Nyongbyon and other areas of Phyongan Province where mulberry and silkworm were widely cultivated, and the province was a leading silk-fabrics producer of Korea. In particular, the quality of silk fabrics produced in Nyongbyon was on a high level. It manufactured mobondan, a high-grade silk, and made the twisting machine to contribute to increasing the silk production.

Valuing the excellent tradition of the nation and paying deep attention to its development, President Kim Il Sung saw to it that a silk mill was built in Nyongbyon after Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule (August 15, 1945).

In June Juche 43 (1954), he examined trial silk fabrics made by technicians and named them "Yaksandan" and "Kuryongdan", showing deep care for the silk production.

Chairman Kim Jong Il indicated the orientation for the Nyongbyon Silk Mill to follow and the ways for putting its production on a normal basis and guided the mill to be a leading silk-fabrics producer of the country.

Today, silk fabrics produced at the mill are widely used in making clothes and quilts.
