Blueberry, growing on the Paektu Plateau, the highest mountainous region in the country, is an indigenous product of Ryanggang Province as well as a specialty of the country.

The blueberry research room of the agroforestrial science institute at Hyesan University of Agriculture and Forestry established a technology for mass-producing high-yielding blueberry saplings by use of fresh branches of blueberry tree.

The Paektusan Blueberry Processing Factory in the suburbs of Hyesan City produces blueberry syrup and liquid stored in oak barrel. According to its manager, those products are drawing the public attention for their mellow and exhilarating flavor.

The Samjiyon Blueberry Drink Factory stored 100 more tons of blueberries last year than before. It is now producing foodstuffs mixed with blueberries including carbonated sweet water, fermentation vinegar drink, candy, bread and millet jelly. Recently, the factory developed various new kinds of products like blueberry jam bread having a peculiar taste.

The Ryanggang Provincial Maternity Hospital provides patients with blueberry syrup and honey containing medicinal properties and various vitamins.

Meanwhile, the Paektusan Youth Blueberry Station and other blueberry cultivation units in the province have increased the area of blueberry field and put its cultivation on a sci-tech basis.
