History of Korea's Fan
Pyongyang, July 28 (KCNA) -- Nowadays many people in the DPRK use various types of fans to mitigate the heat amid the persistent sultry weather.

Fan has a long history in Korea.

According to historical relics and old documents, fan was widely spread in the period of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668). A picture of fan can be seen on the mural at the mausoleum of King Kogukwon (a mural tomb of Koguryo in the mid-4th century) in Anak County of South Hwanghae Province.

In Korea, the fan manufacturing technology had been long developed on a high level. Fans were diverse in shape, color, kind and purpose. They were used to screen sunlight and perform ceremony or as a tool for those in authority and women to hide their faces. Folding fan in the period of Koryo (918-1392) was widely known to other countries as it was elaborate in making and excellent in decoration.

In the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), the shape of fans was more diversified and their making technology was further developed.

Korea's fan is characterized by smooth outline and soft and beautiful color and patterns.

Today the DPRK people use smart and graceful fans well-designed to suit the socialist lifestyle by developing the fan making technology.
