Taedongmun Cinema

Pyongyang, July 30 (KCNA) -- The Taedongmun Cinema in Sungri Street, the central part of Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK, is the country's first cinema house built after the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950 - July 27, 1953). The cinema with peculiar architectural beauty was completed in December Juche 44 (1955) and splendidly remodeled in 2008 as required by the times. President Kim Il Sung saw to it that the cinema was constructed before anything else on the debris after the war to provide the people with a cultural and emotional life. Visiting it nearing completion, he said that it would be advisable to name it "Taedongmun Cinema" as it is located near the famous Taedong Gate. Later, he attended a New Year gathering of Pyongyang City children held there. In July 2007, Chairman Kim Jong Il took a step to remodel the cinema and gave instructions on its construction scores of times. Thus, it was turned into an excellent cinema equipped with all conditions such as the latest projection and sound facilities and into a monumental edifice representing the modern tastes, the architectural demand and the spirit of the times. Looking round the remodeled cinema in June 2008, the Chairman said with pleasure that the people would enjoy a diverse cultural and emotional life to the full as the cinema was renovated as a splendid cultural hall. The Taedongmun Cinema has so far hosted various political and cultural events like Pyongyang International Film Festival. |
