The peak is 1,798 meters above the sea level and towers against the sky as if to safeguard Chairman Kim Jong Il's birthplace in the Paektusan Secret Camp.

President Kim Il Sung named it "Jong Il Peak" in August Juche 77 (1988).

The peak's scenery is superb in all seasons. On its top in winter in particular, one can see a spectacle that blizzard swirls a wavy sea of trees and runs up against the ridge and cliffs of the peak.

Many poems and songs singing of Jong Il Peak have been created in the country.

Among them is a song "Shine, Jong Il Peak" created in 1988, which is still now loved by all the people. This song reflects the minds of the people praising Jong Il Peak with emotional poetic and musical description.
