Such hairdos came into being in the period of the Three Kingdoms (early 3rd century B.C.-middle 7th century A.D.).

According to historical records, girls of Paekje (late 1st century B.C.-660) liked to have hairdo with a single pigtail.

And a picture of girl having hairdo with two pigtails can be seen on the tomb murals dating back to Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668), which were registered as one of the world cultural heritages.

Those hairdos were general in the hairdressing of girls in Koryo (918-1392), too, after Palhae (698-926). A history book "Koryodogyong" says that girls in Koryo had hairdos with pigtails wearing red ribbon on them.

In the period of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910), the hairdos were the most general among the girls' hairdressing so that girls and married women could be well distinguished.

The hairdos with single pigtail and two pigtails, hairstyle well matched with Korean girls' emotion and taste, have been inherited until now, along with Korean chima (skirt) and jogori (coat), traditional women's dress.
