Treasures of DPRK Listed at UNESCO (1)
Pyongyang, August 11 (KCNA) -- In the DPRK, a work for conserving nature and national heritages has been conducted under the special care of the Workers' Party of Korea and the government.

In the course, treasures of the country were registered at the UNESCO (the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization).

Among them is the Paektusan Biosphere Sanctuary, which covers Mt Paektu, known as the ancestral mountain and the sacred mountain of revolution in Korea, and the vast area around it.

Since the area of Mt Paektu was set as the Paektusan Plant Reserve in Juche 35 (1946), it has been preserved under the care of the state. The area was listed as a World Network of Biosphere Reserves by the UNESCO in April 1989.

In the area there are strata of various periods ranging from the lower-agnotozoic era to the Cenozoic era. The geology and topography of Mt Paektu, formed by several times of volcanic eruption and its evolution and development, and plants, animals, hydrologic movement originated in Lake Chon and etc. present a peculiar natural environment rare to be seen not only in the country but also in other regions of the world.

The Paektusan Biosphere Sanctuary in the highest zone of the country has various kinds of plants according to climatic zones as well as lots of animals, birds and other vertebrates and invertebrates acclimated to severe climate and geological and geographical surroundings that remind one of a natural zoo.

Several units of the DPRK, including the Group for Comprehensive Exploration of Lake Chon on Mt Paektu and the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences, have conducted their regular observation, study, management and preservation activities in the area of Mt Paektu.
