Treasures of DPRK Listed at UNESCO (3)
Pyongyang, August 25 (KCNA) -- The biosphere sanctuary of Mt Myohyang in the DPRK covers Mt Myohyang, one of the six famous mountains in Korea, and vast areas around it.

The area of Mt Myohyang, which is called the treasure-house of biodiversity, was registered as World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO (the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization) in Juche 98 (2009).

From olden times, Mt Myohyang has been known to be one of eight scenic spots in Korea for its queer physical aspect of a mountain and graceful landscape.

The mountain displays picturesque sceneries with sky-high peaks, deep valleys, high cliffs, crystal-like water, many waterfalls, thick woods and profound fragrance of flowers, twittering of birds, babbling of shallows, etc.

The sanctuary consists of diverse forest ecosystem.

More than 1 000 species of plants have been confirmed in it. Among them are plants of temperate zone like pine, chestnut tree and Mogolian oak, as well as subarctic zone and subalpine zone plants like Abies nephrolepis, birch, Pinus pumila and Sabina sargentii.

Inhabiting there are over 200 kinds of vertebrate animals including bear, antelope and pheasant.

There are also 20-odd species of endangered plants like wild insam (CR) and Gastrodia elata (EN) and some 20 kinds of endangered animals like musk deer (VU).

In the area, there are many natural monuments including Rhododendron yedoense and historical relics like the Pohyon Temple showing high architecture of Korean ancestors.

Mt Myohyang is a cultural resort of the people.
