Nearly 100 years ago, the Japanese imperialists, who took the sovereignty of Korea by sinister plot and military force, massacred Koreans when a great earthquake occurred in Kanto area of Japan.

The unprecedented great earthquake swept the Kanto area on September 1, 1923. The earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale destroyed everything and the area was turned into a sea of fire. More than 1.2 million residents were left homeless and over 200,000 people died from falling buildings and fire.

Disaster by the great Kanto earthquake recorded in history was not only natural disaster. Availing themselves of the disaster, the Japanese imperialists forced miserable deaths upon the Korean nation.

At that time, residents in the earthquake-hit area protested against the government for having not taken relief steps. Much upset by such strong protest, the Japanese authorities spread a false rumor that Koreans were raising a riot and setting fire collectively, and then ordered to kill them at random.

Thus, such armed groups as army, military police and police and the right-wing gangsters like a civilian "ultra-right organization" were all mobilized to massacre the Korean residents in Japan. More than 23,000 innocent Koreans were slaughtered.
