Popular Education System of DPRK

Pyongyang, September 2 (KCNA) -- The DPRK people learn free of charge to their heart's content under the socialist education system. This is a result from the popular education policy consistently enforced by the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) and the state. President Kim Il Sung regarded the education work as an important affair related to the destiny of the country and saw to it that a university was established first after the liberation of Korea from Japan's colonial rule and bases for training national cadres were built up with it as the parent. He had "Regulations on School Education System in North Korea and Measure for Their Enforcement", a decision of the Provisional People's Committee of North Korea, adopted in December Juche 35 (1946) to set up a genuine democratic education system for the first time in history of the country. In the period of the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953), he took an unprecedented step to establish a new educational system composed of regular educational system and study-while-working educational system. Under his leadership, a universal compulsory primary education system came into effect in 1956, a universal compulsory secondary education system in 1958, a universal nine-year compulsory technical education system in 1967 and a universal compulsory eleven-year education system on September 1, 1975. Free education was enforced at all education units of the country from 1959. The President made public "Theses on Socialist Education" at the 14th Plenary Meeting of the 5th WPK Central Committee on September 5, 1977 to bring about a new turn in the educational development. Today, the universal 12-year compulsory education has been enforced thanks to the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un's noble love for posterity. Under his guidance, the state investment and support for the educational field were strengthened in recent years. As a result, educational conditions and environment of many schools and universities were improved as required by the new century and bases of extracurricular education like schoolchildren's palace were wonderfully built in different parts of the country. |
