The symposium was aimed at putting medical service on a higher scientific and modern basis and consolidating the material and technical foundations for public health.

The symposium was divided into panels of 16 sectors and it was attended by about 600 doctors, researchers and teachers of over 60 units, including Kim Il Sung University, Korea General Red Cross Hospital, Kim Man Yu Hospital, Koryo Medicine General Hospital, the Academy of Medical Science, the Biomedicine Institute, the Medical Instrument Institute, provincial people's hospitals and universities of medicine.

Hundreds of essays contributing to accelerating the development of the nation's medical science and technology and to promoting the people's health, including the issues of putting Koryo medicine on a scientific basis, applying advanced diagnosis and curative methods to clinical practice and ensuring the domestic production of medical instruments, etc. were presented at the symposium.

During the symposium lectures were given on scientific and technological issues arising in the treatment of some diseases with high rates of contraction and death.
