After the liberation of Korea from Japan's colonial rule in August Juche 34 (1945), a vigorous work was conducted to establish the democratic education system. As a part of the work, preparations for the enforcement of universal compulsory primary education system were propelled on a nationwide scale with the involvement of all the people.

The DPRK government enforced the universal compulsory primary education system in 1956 when the postwar reconstruction and the building of the groundwork of socialism were waged under difficult conditions. Two years later, it introduced the compulsory secondary education system.

In 1967 when the task for socialist industrialization was being carried out on a full scale, the government enforced the universal nine-year compulsory technical education, which helps closely combine the secondary general education with the basic technical education and the education with productive labor, to lay a springboard for rapidly increasing the overall technical level of society.

And it introduced the universal 11-year compulsory education, for the first time in the world, in 1972 when a great heyday was opened in all sectors of the state and social life.

Thanks to the successful introduction of universal compulsory eleven-year education and the implementation of the "Theses on Socialist Education", bases for training reserve talents came into being and a work for improving the secondary general education was actively conducted. In the course, many reserve scientists and technicians were produced.

The above-said successes are a brilliant fruition of the idea of President Kim Il Sung and Chairman Kim Jong Il on education of rising generations and their energetic guidance.

The DPRK government proclaimed a law on enforcing the universal 12-year compulsory education on September 25, 2012, in reflection of the requirements of the reality in which the building of a socialist power is conducted on a full scale in the country.

Reflected in the universal 12-year compulsory education system is the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un's noble outlook on the country, posterity and future.
