Forest and Water Conservation in DPRK
|
|
Pyongyang, September 29 (KCNA) -- Songchon County in South Phyongan Province and Unsan County in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK are mountainous areas with many rivers and streams. In the past, the counties were often damaged by landslide and flooding. But now, such natural disaster can never be witnessed there after primary and steady efforts were directed to the forest and water conservation to turn the mountains and rivers into treasure ones. From several years ago, the counties have conducted such river improvement projects as excavation of river bed and embankment in a systematic way. They improved lands, reclaimed cold and damp soils and carried out a project for hillside and streamlet erosion control to protect farm lands from any natural disaster. They also pushed ahead with the technical improvement of roads to ensure their stability and modernity and built mother tree nurseries to produce one million and hundreds of thousands of saplings of good species annually and plant them in mountains. In the course of surmounting the recent disastrous abnormal weather, the people in those counties came to have a deeper understanding that forest and water conservation is a vital work. Their successes and experiences are being generalized throughout the country. |
