Typical Folds in DPRK

Pyongyang, September 30 (KCNA) -- In the DPRK, Jangsusan fold, Songchon fold, Komdok fold and West Pyongyang fold are registered as natural monuments. Jangsusan fold, 25 kilometers away southwest of the township of Jaeryong County in South Hwanghae Province, is a large fan-shaped fold rare to be seen in the world. It covers an area between 150 meters and 350 meters above the sea level and its bottom width is about 250 meters. This fold visually shows the peculiar characteristics of Mesozoic tectonic motion in Korea and its shape. Songchon fold is about 16 kilometers away east of the township of Songchon County in South Phyongan Province. It is of significance in studying the shape and characteristics of fold structure. Komdok fold in Tanchon City of South Hamgyong Province has superposed fold structure. This fold with ore-contain structure is of high economic and academic significance. West Pyongyang fold is some 500 meters away northeast of West Pyongyang Railway Station in Pyongyang. Its length is 120 meters and width is 20 meters. The fold shows the Taebo tectonic movement in the Mesozoic era as well as the development of stratum by tectogenesis. |
