According to an official concerned at the Ministry of Agriculture, the wheat and barley cultivation area was expanded 1.7 times as against last year throughout the country.

In consideration of their agro-meteorological conditions and cultivation situation, various regions conducted a detailed survey of the right soils for wheat and barley cultivation and have minutely taken technical measures for carrying out a new wheat and barley cultivation plan.

North Hwanghae, South Phyongan and South Hwanghae provinces increased the cultivation area nearly twice. They set the right two-crop fields on the basis of detailed analysis of soil conditions to provide a scientific guarantee for ensuring the proper season of wheat and barley cultivation.

The ministry has propelled the work for providing material and technical means including the securement of wheat and barley seeds.

Meanwhile, the Academy of Agricultural Science has intensified the research into breeding high-yielding wheat and barley species.
