Pyongyang, November 24 (KCNA) -- The DPRK agriculturists have recently bred 10-odd high-yielding fruit species suitable to the climatic and soil conditions of the country, which were registered in the list of national variety. According to Kye Ryong Gil, head of the Institute of Pomiculture under the Academy of Agricultural Science, the new fruit species include apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot and other two kinds of fruits. A sweet apricot species with more than 18 percent in sugar content can be cultivated everywhere as it has strong resistance to diseases, drought and moisture than the previous ones, and there is no alternate bearing in this species. A new strain of red plum with beautiful color is heavy in weight per fruit, suitable to dense cultivation and high in the yield. Grape species with more than 20 percent in sugar content for wine were also supplied to fruit farms. Meanwhile, the agronomists analyzed the growth state of fruit trees planted in northern highlands of the country including Samjiyon City of Ryanggang Province and the effect of harmful insects on them and took thorough measures for their safe cultivation. They are now striving to breed new fruit species, highly resistant to cold and superior in taste, weight and yield than the previous ones by means of bioengineering. |
