The Ministry of Fisheries directed big efforts to the shipbuilding in order to strengthen the material and technical foundation for the fishing industry. As a result, efficient fishing boats were built at many units including Chongjin and Thongchon fishery stations in the eastern coastal area and Nampho and Kamapho fishery stations in the western coastal area.

Unprecedented high results were recorded in winter fishing. The ministry worked out a detailed plan for catching fish as much as possible in due season through an intensive fishing campaign and took necessary material and technical measures in a foresighted way.

After finishing the repair of fishing boats and tackles, fishery stations in the eastern coastal area advanced all at once to the main fishing grounds.

Fishing boats of the Sinpho Distant-Sea Fishery Complex recorded good results by catching many fishes at a haul. The complex took the lead in fishing among the units under the ministry. In particular, the Yanghwa Fishery Station caught many fish by increasing the out-fishing days of boats and putting the direction over fishing on a scientific and unified basis of higher level.

Rakwon and Songdowon fishery stations, too, raised the operation rate of fishing boats through scientific fishing work and the reduction of unloading time to increase the fish catch.

Sea culture units including Pupho and Ongjin offshore farms in the western coastal area expanded the cultivation areas and put the management of culture grounds on a scientific basis to successfully fulfill their seaweed production plans for this year.

A work for sustained development of the fishing industry has been pushed ahead more vigorously. Such projects as building wharfs and embankments and repairing breakwaters were completed at various fishery stations and the first-stage modernization project at the Tanchon Shipbuilding Yard was finished at the fixed date.
