Paektusan Prize Sports Contest among Officials of National Institutions Opens
Pyongyang, February 4 (KCNA) -- The 25th Paektusan Prize Sports Contest among Officials of National Institutions was opened with due ceremony at the Basketball Gymnasium in Chongchun Street here on Thursday to mark the Day of the Shining Star, the greatest auspicious holiday of the Korean nation (the birth anniversary of Chairman Kim Jong Il).

The participants, divided into four groups, will compete in basketball, volleyball, Taekwon-do, shooting, tug of war and other events at the Basketball Gymnasium, the Taekwon-Do Hall, the Meari Shooting Gallery, etc. in Chongchun Street.

Present at the opening ceremony were Kim Song Ryong, vice-premier of the Cabinet, Pak In Chol, chairman of the Central Committee of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea, officials concerned and officials and players of commissions, ministries and national institutions exemplary in mass-based sports activities.

Ri Tu Song, department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea who doubles as vice-chairman of the National Sports Guidance Committee, made an opening address.

The speaker said that the contest to be held on the occasion of the significant Day of the Shining Star would be an important opportunity of fully showing the revolutionary enthusiasm of officials of the commissions, ministries and national institutions to glorify this year as a year of great revolutionary auspicious events to be recorded in the history of the country as well as the sports techniques acquired by them through mass-based sports activities.

There was a march-past by the players.

After the ceremony, there took place a men's basketball match between teams of the Ministry of Land and Environment Protection and the Ministry of Land and Maritime Transport.
