Horse Riding, Pride of Korean Nation
Pyongyang, February 11 (KCNA) -- A riding competition took place in the DPRK on lunar New Year's Day this year. It showed well the traditional riding custom of the Korean people.

Riding is one of the excellent customs the Korean nation has kept for thousands of years since the period of Ancient Korea (early 30th century B.C. - 108 B.C.).

In particular, people of Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277 - A.D. 668) were fond of horse riding. At that time, the horse riding was one of the important martial art events and a standard for selecting the talents.

For such excellent horsemanship of its people, Koguryo could demonstrate its might as a powerful state in the East for one thousand years.

It can be well known through a historical data recording that sage King Tongmyong had been good at horse riding from his childhood and Yaksu-ri and Tokhung-ri tomb murals vividly showing features of Koguryo warriors hunting animals on horseback.

Riding custom of Koguryo was succeeded in the periods of Koryo (918-1392) and the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910).

As seen above, the Korean people have trained their body and mind through horse riding from olden times to defend their land from foreign aggression.

Today, such excellent tradition is carried on through brisk horse riding activities at different riding clubs and parks of the country that were wonderfully built under the care of the Workers' Party of Korea.
