Songdan, Scenic Spot of DPRK

Pyongyang, March 1 (KCNA) - There is a thick piney forest about 4 kilometers from the Riwon County Town in South Hamgyong Province of the DPRK. According to historical records, this place had no pine tree and the area was not fit for farming as it was much affected by sea wind. So, villagers in the area began to plant and cultivate young pine trees on sandy shore to create windbreak. The young pine trees grew up to form a forest, presenting beautiful scenery. The place came to be widely known as Songdan famous for its piney forest. When visiting the Songdan-ri (then) of Riwon County in August Juche 38 (1949), President Kim Il Sung said that Songdan looks like a picture as it is washed by the sea on the front side and covered with farm fields on the back side surrounded by low and high mountains. Noting that in the past the Japanese imperialists cut down pine trees of the sandy shore, long cultivated by our ancestors, at random and thus spoiled its beautiful scenery, the President earnestly called for planting pine trees on its blank spaces to add beauty to the scenery of the seashore. Visiting the place in July Juche 56 (1967), Chairman Kim Jong Il stressed that the piney forest is a precious treasure to be well conserved through generations. Today, Songdan serves as a scenic spot for the people under the leadership of the respected Comrade Kim Jong Un. |
