Pyongyang, June 24 (KCNA) -- President Kim Il Sung declared the inauguration of the West Sea Barrage on June 24, Juche 75 (1986). The President set the position of the barrage aboard a ship on May 22, Juche 70 (1981) and opened up bright prospects for concluding the project successfully. Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the barrage under construction several times to steer the struggle for successfully implementing the grand nature-remaking plan of the President. Under the wise leadership of the peerlessly great men, soldiers of the People's Army and builders wrought a miracle of completing the project, which had been alleged to take 20 years, within five years. Kim Il Sung saw to it that a monument inscribed with his autograph letters "The West Sea Barrage is a great creation produced by our people's revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude. Glory to its builders! Kim Il Sung May 22, 1986" was erected to covey the heroic feats of the builders. The West Sea Barrage has contributed to promoting foreign trade, marine transport, motor transport and development of electric power industry, ensuring the full provision of irrigation, industrial and domestic water in the west coastal area of the country and protecting the city of Pyongyang from flood damage by controlling water level of the Taedong River for decades. The 8 kilometer-long barrage, wonderfully built across rough sea, is a monumental edifice in the era of the Workers' Party produced by the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance and fortitude of the army and people of the DPRK. |
