The Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway was built in nearly 160 kilometers-long section from Taegak-ri in Kaechon City to Lake Thaesong in October Juche 91 (2002).

Thus, a unique gravity-flow irrigation system of Korean style was established and large-scale waterways were stretched out one after another in all parts of the country based on this success and experience.

Chairman Kim Jong Il, who wisely led the work to complete the irrigation of the rural economy provided by President Kim Il Sung on a high level, unfolded a grand plan to transform the irrigation system in the western region into a natural water supply system.

In December 1998 Chairman Kim Jong Il gave officials detailed instructions on the location of the dam and the route of the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway.

He examined the layout of the waterway on several occasions, clearly indicated the orientation and ways for its construction and aroused the whole Party, the entire army and all the people to the project.

The builders successfully completed the waterway in a little over two years since the first blasting.

On the basis of the experience and success gained in the Kaechon-Lake Thaesong Waterway project, he energetically led the struggle to build modern irrigation facilities one after another.

In the new century of Juche, the DPRK has created a series of assets of lasting value of great significance in the development of agriculture and land construction.

The waterway was completed in South Hwanghae Province and more than 40 kilometer-long waterway was newly built in Kumya County, South Hamgyong Province.

True to the intention of the Workers' Party of Korea to reinforce the irrigation system of the country as a whole and further perfect it, many large and small waterways have been built in different parts of the country and the works for repairing irrigation structure and expanding irrigation area have been pushed forward with to lay a solid foundation for agricultural production and improvement of the people's standard of living.
